Welcome to us at Förnyelselabbet
We are a national platform for systemic design, learning and societal transformation.
Since 2016, we have worked on collaborative projects around complex societal challenges such as integration, climate change and social sustainability with both local and national organizations.
We are particularly good at bringing together a group of different actors and organizations and helping them create common understanding, direction and learning around a difficult societal challenge they need to address.
If you want to work with us, check out the our offers, if you want to read about our previous projects, check out the collaborations(Samarbeten)!
In our ambition to strengthen the capacity of organizations to collaborate, learn and transform, there is also inspiration material under the inspiration tab.

Our History
Förnyelselabbet (SE) was initiated in 2016 by SVID, the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions to explore user-centred systems innovation and collaboration in a lab environment. Together with some 40 stakeholders, the lab set out to explore the societal challenge of how unaccompanied children and youth experienced their reception in the Swedish welfare system.
As Sweden’s first policylab, Förnyelselabbet started to explore systemic design and have developed methods within this field in many different challenges, from the start. Building learning infrastructures in each lab have always been important. To strengthen the emerging pool of different labs and learn from each other, Förnyelselabbet started the Swedish Lab Network in 2017.
In 2021 Förnyelselabbet, Rise and other organizations got together to initiate a network called; Governance Innovation Sweden aiming at speeding up new forms of governance and procurement processes.
Förnyesleabbet believe in situational and context-driven labs. Each lab process gathers relevant functions and target groups around the challenge. Stories are collected and analyzed collectively and then ideas of renewed futures are tried out within the lab context. Speculative design has become one method to frame alternative futures and the labs always serve as a learning infrastructure for citizens, practitioners, and policymakers. A key element in the emerging methodology has been to stay true to the arts and craft part of design allowing participants many different ways to analyze systems. The lab has also increasingly worked with Swedish governmental agencies to facilitate joint collaborative projects such as building shared data infrastructures, policy labs for more local global impact and assisting agencies in creating systems learning conferences and networks. Systems maps, cultural analysis and governance transformation has then been in the forefront of the processes. Förnyelselabbet has also contributed design expertise to the development of Viable Cities, a strategic innovation program for smart and sustainable cities that is anchored in the Climate KIC and led by KTH. Since 2023, Förnyelselabbet is an independent limited company.

Thriving youth, pushing boundaries with the DDC
Sara Gry talks about how we need to see wild problems as the fondation to for missions. She let us look closer into how the mission Thriving Youth was formed and what methods and insights have emerged during the work.
Gry is the leader of the Danish Design Center’s initiative with a mission for Thriving youth. They talk about how they work, lessons learned and effects so far. Watch and be inspired.
System change is not about developing a solution to a problem. It is about experimenting with many interventions to unleash a larger change in a common direction.
